Paul McCann is a Marrithiyel man Darwin-born, a traditional landowner connected to his country, ‘Delye’, located 350 km Southwest of Darwin in the Northern Territory.
Growing up Paul was exposed to art from a very young age by watching his father, uncles and aunties create paintings, woodcarvings and didgeridoos. Paul has been painting seriously for the past six years with much of his artwork depicting the landscapes of traditional land ‘Deyle’.
Deciding not to follow in the style of his father and family, Paul set out on his own journey of creative self discovery, foregoing any formal training in favor of exploring his own creative style and instincts.
Paul begins by laying out a basic geometric design but as the work evolves he allows his intuition and the spontaneity of the creative process to take over to complete the visual journey.
Paul's work tells stories of his own life, of his culture and family experience and traditions of his land. He likes to manipulate shapes and lines, starting from circles, which represent his Ancestors Past and Present, and the chaotic nature of life and it's unpredictable path and journey.
Paul now resides in Melbourne where he continues to create new bodies of work with his unique contemporary abstract style combining links to his family traditions, yet allows for his own style to transform the work in a modern and new direction.
